Pressure Cookers and Microwaves
Pressure cooking and using the microwave are both much more energy efficient ways of cooking compared to using a conventional oven. A pressure cooker can cook food up to 10 times faster and use up to 75 percent less energy than a conventional oven and microwaves are about 75 more effiecient than a conventional oven.
Other ways to reduce the amount of energy used in cooking include:
- Cutting up into smaller pieces. A steak cut up into cues will reduce cooking time up to 33 percent. Carrots that are cut up will cook twice as fast as a whole carrot
- Toaster ovens use up to 2/3 less energy than a conventional oven.
- Use smaller appliances. They will always use less energy than a conventional oven. Try to use crock-pots, pressure cookers, toaster ovens, or microwaves to cook your food
- The minute your water boils, turn the heat down a little. It will still maintain the boil and use less energy
- Switch to copper pots - they heat faster than any other kind, reducing the amount of energy needed to cook your food.
