Carrots
Growing carrots requires good knowledge of your soil type. Long carrots require deep, smooth soil. If you don't have that kind of soil you can grow shorter varieties including: Nantes Half-long or Goldinhart.
If your soil is very heavy you may want to try varieties that are more beet-like such as: Gold Nugget, Oxheart, or Planet. These varieties also do well in patio planters.
After carrots begin growing you will want to thin them out when they are about an inch high. You want to leave just enough space between plants so that the roots will not be choking each other out.
Carrots make excellent vegetables to plant between rows of other short-day crops such as radishes or lettuce.
Carrots can be dried, frozen, or canned for storage and provide many vitamins.
